January 2009:TERRANOVA COFFEE ESTATE
Our coffee and our vision:
Terranova Coffee has become one of the most talked about coffees in the world today. Terranova’s AA beans have found their way into coffee houses from Tokyo to San Francisco and from London to Johannesburg. Terranova prides itself in the meticulous preparation of their hand picked coffee, which is only picked when it’s perfectly ripe. Perfectly ripe cherries mean a perfect cup.
Coffee is not the only thing that Terranova cares about on the estate. Terranova coffee wouldn’t be around today if it were not for the thousands of folks employed on the farm, where you also find a school and a clinic dedicated to enriching the lives of the people. A portion of the sale of Terranova coffee goes to maintaining the school and the clinic. In addition, the estate contributes heavily to the wildlife management of the Lower Zambezi National Park, as well as Chikankata Hospital run by The Salvation Army. Chikankata is today one of Africa’s leading AIDS research facilities.
The history:
In 1985, on the rolling hills of the upper Kaleya valley in Zambia, the Street family began cultivating one of the most exceptional coffees in the world. Once exclusive in only the European market, Mr. Warren Street has brought our fine coffee to the United States and until now, was only available in places such as San Francisco and Seattle.
Today, due to the power of the internet, this coffee is available to the entire United States directly from the farm. This single origin, double AA Arabica is available green or roasted for those who desire an extraordinary cup of coffee.
The farm (from Zambia with love):
The thriving farming community of Mazabuka lies on the rolling hills of the upper Kaleya valley. Just beyond the famous Munali Mountain pass, this small rural farming town sits just off the main road to the town of Livingstone, named for the famous explorer. This African country is the home of one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World – the Victoria Falls. Northern Rhodesia, named for the famous Rhodes Scholar Benefactor, Mr. Cecil Rhodes, gained its independence in 1964 and became a country now known as “Zambia”.
In the Zambian village of Mazabuka, the Terranova Coffee Estate has helped to build a community within itself. Here a self sustained farm supports a village, where over 300 people live and work year round. This coffee estate also provides work for over 2,500 temporary workers during peak coffee season.
A school in Africa:
The Street family started a school on their coffee estate in 2001, after making and laying each brick by hand. The overwhelming need for education in their rural farming district prompted them to open two grade one classes for the children of those who worked on their farm. Seven classes later, a pre school and 210 children now occupy the school houses where several teachers and a headmaster also preside. It's called Terranova School.

Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, USA has adopted Terranova School in a sister school program, which will help provide Terranova School with much needed text books, computers and reading materials. Teachers will have the opportunity to visit and work with each other, learning new ways of growing, teaching and building.

(Black Apron Exclusives™ - No. 1 2007):
In 2003, Terranova Estate became the first Starbucks’ C.A.F.E. practices certified supplier in Africa. C.A.F.E. (Coffee and Farmer Equity) practices is a set of coffee buying guidelines designed to reward not just sustainable farming but also high quality coffee - something Terranova was working on intensely.
The harsh Zambian dry season had been drying their harvest too quickly. By deliberately slowing the process, the growers allowed the flavours inside the bean to fully develop, revealing notes of stone fruit (think apricot) and cocoa in the cup - a complexity you might expect from a master blend but is surprising to find in nature. Fortunately for all of us, the growers at Terranova have always believed in the potential of their coffee, which Starbucks is proud to present as a Black Apron Exclusives™ offering.
This African coffee features extremely complex flavours, particularly for a single origin coffee. Juicy acidity and a nutty cocoa finish compliment subtle layers of citrus, stone fruit and tea like tannins. Highly complex, with subtle flavours of black tea, stone fruit and a soft cocoa finish.
