Comprised of Tanzania’s
most progressive smallholder farmers, the Association of
Kilimanjaro Specialty Coffee Growers (AKSCG) is proud to
deliver the finest coffee that Tanzania has to offer. AKSCG
coffees originate in the country’s highland regions
around Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain,
and in the Mount Livingstone Ranges in the south west, near
Lake Nyasa.
The Association currently represents 62 farmer-businesses, each committed to
producing high-quality coffee for the specialty market. Around 6,000 farmers
sell their coffee through the Association, which consistently wins high prices
for its members. In the 2002/3 season, Southern Highlands members sold coffee
at prices on average 66% higher than non-members in the region, while northern
groups’ prices were on average 40% higher. |

the slopes of Mount Meru, some 70 kms to the west of Mount
Kilimanjaro, is part of an old German Trappe family farm
measuring 32 acres suitable for agriculture. The farm has
its own processing facilities and only fully red ripe cherries
of coffee are picked and pulped on the same day to preserve
the inherent good quality. Replanting to replace mostly 40
years old coffee is ongoing. |

Mondul Coffee Estate was established
in 1931 by Count Vittorio Davico. His two sons are now
running the Estate and pride themselves in producing the
finest washed arabica coffee in Tanzania. Mondul Coffee
Estate holds the Tanzania Coffee Assocation Quality Award
for the 1998/99 and 2000/01 seasons. In March 2002 EAFCA
awarded the Estate the Certificate of Recognition for presenting "qualifying
fine coffee" at the EAFCA Cupping Competition 2002
held in Kampala.
The coffee is kept on a capped multiple-stem system and
is rain-fed. Years of dedicated management have achieved
average productions of 1500kg per ha with the following
average grade percentage: AA 30%, AB 60%, PB 5%.
The availability of clean spring water abstracted from
the Monduli Forest Reserve contributes to the excellent
quality of the coffee.
